Economics
Admission criteria
Economics applicants are not required to submit a portfolio or work sample for Harvard College admission. Optional supplementary materials such as scholarly articles, research, creative writing, videos, audio, or images may be submitted if they show truly exceptional talent, but Harvard says its standard application materials are usually sufficient.
Harvard requires a Common Application personal essay plus five Harvard short-answer questions. The writing is used to show what you care about, how your life experiences and activities shaped you, how you engage with others, and your aspirations for the future. Because Harvard uses holistic review and explicitly considers personal qualities and fit with the community, this written component clearly matters.
High school academic accomplishment is a major factor. Harvard requires the school report, transcript, and midyear grades, and says academic accomplishment in high school is important. For an intended Economics path, strong overall academic preparation is what is evaluated at entry because there is no separate economics-selection process before enrollment.
Harvard currently requires SAT or ACT scores for first-year applicants, with approved alternatives only when those tests are not accessible. International and U.S. applicants are evaluated under the same rules. English proficiency exams such as TOEFL or IELTS are not required for first-year applicants, but may be submitted for review; they cannot replace the SAT or ACT requirement.
