Overview
This is a selective Dutch research-university master's programme with a capped intake of 200 students. Applicants must first clear formal academic and English thresholds, then eligible applicants are manually ranked against each other on programme-specific criteria led by GPA, relevant AI work, technical preparation, thesis topic, motivation, advanced AI coursework, and publications.

Admission criteria

PortfolioHigh

The programme does not ask for a design portfolio, but it does evaluate substantive prior work in AI. In the ranking, UvA explicitly considers relevant completed AI projects, the topic of the bachelor's thesis, and publications; applicants also upload a bachelor's thesis/project description.

Bar to clear: Completed, relevant AI projects plus a strong bachelor's thesis/project topic

Statement of PurposeMedium

A motivation matching the content of the master's programme is an entry requirement, and 'motivation for contents Master’s programme' is also an explicit ranking criterion. UvA requires a motivation letter in English of up to 500 words.

Bar to clear: Motivation letter in English, max. 500 words, clearly matched to the MSc AI curriculum

Academics & GPAHigh

Academic preparation is central. Applicants need a qualifying AI/Computer Science-type background or equivalent coursework in computer science, programming, calculus, linear algebra, and probability/statistics. UvA also sets a minimum GPA and then ranks eligible applicants by GPA first, alongside programming skills, logic, mathematics, and relevant AI courses at master's level.

Bar to clear: Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 equivalent and required university-level AI/CS/math coursework

Test scoresLow

Standardized admission tests such as GRE are not listed. English test scores are required only to prove language proficiency unless the applicant qualifies for an exemption, and they are not listed as ranking criteria.

Bar to clear: IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band, or TOEFL iBT 100 with required subscores

How to stand out
Show 2-4 clearly AI-relevant projects with concrete technical depth, methods used, and outcomes; generic software work is less aligned than AI-focused work.
Use the motivation letter to connect your prior coursework and projects directly to this curriculum's AI content, not just to general career goals.
Make your transcript easy to assess by highlighting courses that satisfy UvA's required preparation in programming, computer science, calculus, linear algebra, and probability/statistics.
If your GPA is near the minimum, strengthen the file with stronger evidence on advanced AI courses, thesis topic, and completed AI projects.
Meet the English threshold before the application deadline; language scores below the stated minimum do not help because the programme uses them as a requirement, not a competitive boost.
