Admission criteria
This programme does not list a portfolio or work-sample requirement in its published application materials. Edinburgh's postgraduate admissions policy says portfolios are only required for some programmes and would be stated in the Degree Finder; the AI MSc instead lists academic qualifications, personal statement and supporting academic documents.

A personal statement is required and is used to judge fit, motivation and understanding of the programme. Edinburgh says the statement helps selectors decide whether you are a good match, and its postgraduate competition guidance says motivation for studying the degree programme is considered. College guidance for unsuccessful applicants also says a weak statement can fail if it does not show programme understanding, motivation or ability to succeed.

Academic preparation is the decisive factor. The AI MSc requires a UK 2:1 or international equivalent in a relevant discipline, but the programme states entry is competitive and a typical offer normally requires a UK first-class honours degree. It also requires essential programming competence and substantial prior mathematics covering calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics/reasoning, and probability. University policy says all complete applications meeting minimum requirements are then considered competitively on their merits.

Standardized admissions tests are not listed for this programme, but English-language test evidence is required for applicants who cannot meet the English requirement through prior study or another accepted route. The programme page lists IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component, or TOEFL iBT 100 with at least 23 in each component before 21 January 2026. University policy also says applicants do not need the English qualification at the point of application because offers can be made conditional on later meeting it.
