Overview
Cornell reviews first-year applicants holistically for undergraduate admission. For Computer Science, applicants do not enter the CS major directly; they apply to either the College of Arts and Sciences for the B.A. path or Cornell Engineering for the B.S. path, and the same overall Cornell review framework applies across both.

Admission criteria

PortfolioLow

Portfolio work is not part of admission for Cornell Computer Science. Cornell only asks for portfolios or design supplements for design-based majors, not CS.

Statement of PurposeHigh

Cornell places major emphasis on the required Cornell Writing Supplement. For CS applicants, the supplement is used to assess authentic voice, fit with the college/school, reasons for choosing Cornell, and alignment with either Arts and Sciences or Engineering. Engineering explicitly says its supplemental essays are an essential part of the application.

Academics & GPAHigh

Cornell strongly emphasizes a rigorous secondary-school curriculum and an outstanding academic record. Official Cornell guidance highlights intellectual potential, coursework preparation, academic rigor, and transcript strength; the Common Data Set lists rigor of secondary school record and academic GPA as very important. For CS, math and science preparation matter especially, with stricter expectations on the Engineering path.

Bar to clear: Outstanding record in a rigorous curriculum; Engineering expects calculus, chemistry, and physics

Test scoresHigh

Cornell requires SAT or ACT scores from first-year applicants and states that test scores help provide a more complete picture when read in context with GPA, rigor, and essays. Applicants who do not meet Cornell’s English-language exemption rules must also submit an English proficiency test.

Bar to clear: SAT or ACT required; if English test required, IELTS 7.5+ or Duolingo 130+

How to stand out
Choose the correct Cornell route for CS before applying: Arts and Sciences B.A. or Engineering B.S., because the supplement prompts and academic preparation expectations differ.
Build essays around authentic academic motivation for computing and specific fit with Cornell’s curriculum, opportunities, and the college/school you are applying to.
Show the strongest math and science preparation available in your school context, especially if applying through Engineering.
Submit required SAT or ACT scores early, and if English testing applies to you, meet or exceed Cornell’s published competitive minimums.
